USD President Announces Retirement | 10/14/26

VERMILLION, S.D. – University of South Dakota (USD) President Sheila Gestring has announced her retirement, marking the conclusion of more than two decades of service to the university. Her career at USD reflects a deep commitment to student success and the continued growth of South Dakota’s flagship university.

Since becoming president in 2018, Gestring has strengthened academic programs, expanded student opportunities, and advanced USD’s service to the state. The university has continued to grow its impact in education, research, and community partnerships. Under her leadership, USD has also invested in the facilities and resources students need to succeed.

“President Gestring has always been deeply committed to her students, to South Dakota, and to higher education. It has been a privilege working alongside her,” said Nathan Lukkes, South Dakota Board of Regents Executive Director. “Under her leadership, USD has reached new heights, from enrollment and fundraising records to investments in modern facilities that enhance the student experience. She has also been a trusted voice and leader among her fellow presidents and partners across the state. We are grateful for her many contributions to USD and for her lasting commitment to the university.”

Throughout her presidency, Gestring has advanced USD’s mission and strengthened its role in preparing students for the workforce and meeting South Dakota’s evolving needs. Her leadership has helped position the university for continued growth and long-term success.

“Serving as USD’s eighteenth president has been the honor of my professional life,” Gestring said. “I am grateful to the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners who have been part of this journey. I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and confident USD is well positioned for continued success.”

President Gestring’s retirement will be effective June 21, 2027. SDBOR will begin the search for USD’s next president this fall. Additional details, including the search timeline and committee membership, will be announced as they become available.
